Abstract: | Describes experiment to study evolution of consolidated layer of new ice ridge formed on multi-year ice. Notes that main factor influencing formation of this layer is sum of degree-days of frost. Reports that consolidated layer of ice ridge grows irregularly, with its thickness increasing according to a power law until water filling space between ice ridge keel blocks freezes. Layer thickness then sharply increases by an amount equal to thickness of ice block located below consolidated layer. |
