Constraints on the duration and freshwater release of Heinrich event 4 through isotope modelling / D. Roche, D. Paillard, E. Cortijo.

Title: Constraints on the duration and freshwater release of Heinrich event 4 through isotope modelling / D. Roche, D. Paillard, E. Cortijo.
Author(s): Roche, D.
Paillard, D.
Cortijo, E.
Date: 2004.
In: Nature. (2004.), Vol. 432(7015) (2004)
Abstract: Uses CLIMBER-2 climate model that explicitly calculates ocean oxygen isotope distribution to simulate Heinrich event 4 (HE4) at about 40 kyr ago. Compares ensemble of scenarios for HE4 with oxygen isotope data in foraminiferal calcite from North Atlantic sediment cores. Discusses sensitivity of modelled thermohaline circulation to freshwater input. Concludes HE4 lasted 250 ± 150 yr with ice release equivalent to 2 ± 1 m sea level. Suggests consequences of Heinrich events may have been less severe than previously assumed, at least with respect to Greenland climate and sea level.
