Abstract: Presents new method for obtaining Arctic snow and ice cover from MVISR (Multichannel Visible and Infrared Scan Radiometer) data. Using several thousand samples representing snow and ice, cloud, land and water from FY-1D MVISR imagery of Arctic, examines spectral and textural differences distinguishing clouds from snow and ice, and develops discriminant function based on Bayes classifier. Compares results for several five-day periods with IMS Daily Northern Hemisphere Snow and Ice Analysis from NOAA/NESDIS, reporting accuracies between 72% and 91%.
