Abstract: Describes lives of settlers in Chukotka focusing on their perceptions of identity and belonging. Describes process of northern settlement during 1955-91 and benefits to settlers. Gives account of crisis of 1990s when this Arctic idyll was destroyed. Examines modernization during 2001-2005 with particular reference to governorship of Roman Abramovich. Analyzes impact on local settlers and highlights alienation felt by many of them.
