Abstract: | Examines descent and spreading of high salinity water generated by salt rejection during sea ice formation in Antarctic coastal polynya, using hydrostatic, primitive equation three-dimensional ocean model. Numerical simulations show robust buoyancy-driven coastal current, with bottom drag the main determinant of current width. Current becomes unstable upstream of its front when polynya is adjacent to coast, and when polynya is situated offshore, unstable current is produced from outset owing to capture of cyclonic eddies. Investigation of effect of coastal protrusion and canyon on current motion shows current sheds dipolar eddy due to convex shape of coastal protrusion. |
