Record #184248:

The little bird and the big whale / Louwrens Hacquebord.

Title: The little bird and the big whale / Louwrens Hacquebord.
Author(s): Hacquebord, Louwrens.
Date: 2008.
In: Circumpolar Studies. (2008.), Vol. 4 (2008)
Abstract: Investigates whaling and impact on avifauna on Spitsbergen. Reconstructs historic population size of bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) and original migration patterns from annual catch records, notaries' acts, itineraries and shipping logs. Argues that ultimate extermination of bowhead whale made huge quantities of plankton available for other marine mammals, polar cod, and plankton-feeding birds. In special issue A passion for the Pole : ethological research in polar regions.
