Abstract: Reports issuing of formal apology by Canadian Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, for treatment of Native children in residential schools. Notes that Canadian government first became involved in residential schools in 1880s in joint ventures with several churches; also that primary objectives were to isolate children from influence of homes and assimilate them in to dominant culture. Some residential schools operated until 1990s.
