Abstract: | Examines history of deliberations on Falklands/Malvinas issue at United Nations (UN) and evaluates effect of Britain's adding islands to decolonisation list in 1964, adoption of resolution 2065(XX) in 1965 urging UK and Argentina to negotiate, course of subsequent negotiations, and attitude of UN General Assembly to use of force in territorial disputes in India, Indonesia and Morroco. Discusses events at UN from 31st March 1982, and particularly British decision to avoid arguments over sovereignty and focus on Argentina's use of aggression. Provides detailed account of Security Council debate on 2-3 April leading to Resolution 502, which called for cessation of hostilies, withdrawal of Argentine forces and seeking of diplomatic solution. Assesses importance of factors such as personnel changes in Security Council and personalities of individual negotiators. |
