Title: Village public safety officer turnover and reported violent crime in Alaska Native villages / Darryl S. Wood.
Author(s): Wood, Darryl S.
Date: 2008.
In: Northern Review. (2008.), Vol. 28 (2008)
Abstract: Reviews achievements of Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) programme (started in 1980s as response to high rates of accidental and intentional injury deaths in isolated Alaska Native villages. Notes problems of high VPSO employment turnover, resulting in lack of local police presence for susbstantial periods. Examines impact of lack of presence upon public safety using records of offences reported to Alaska State Troopers between 1998-2002, but finds no statistically differences in reported rates of homicide or sexual assault when villages were or were not served by VPSO.
