Abstract: Examines current political situation in Sweden related to efforts to comply with European Community's International Labour Organization Convention no. 169 concerning indigenous and tribal peoples in independent countries. Summarises need for studying traditional subsistence practised by Swedish Saami herders, and uses results of subsistence research among Alaskan Inuit groups as comparative framework for types of information that can be obtained from such investigations.
