Abstract: Discusses logistical problems posed by upsurge in scientific activity generated by 2007-08 International Polar Year (IPY), and strains on existing capacity (in terms of suitably adapted ships, aircraft, communications equipment and laboratory facilities). Also considers challenges of major non-IPY project: simultaneous construction of 10-metre South Pole Telescope and installation of 1-km² Ice Cube neutrino array at US Amundsen Scott station.
