Abstract: Examines possible first sightings of sub-Antarctic Heard Island by Peter Kemp of Magnet in 1833 and Thomas Long of Charles Carroll in 1848, with particular reference to Douglas Mawson's advocacy of Kemp's claim. Includes account of unsuccessful attempts by Captain Heard of Oriental, who made first confirmed sighting in November 1853, to have island claimed by United States; British sovereignty claim in 1910; scientific research on island since 1874 visit of Challenger, particularly Mawson's visit in November 1929; Norwegian and South African sealing in early 20th century; and transfer of sovereignty from Britain to Australia in 1947.
