| Abstract: | Describes increasing populations of both breeding and non-breeding Antarctic fur seals at sub-Antarctic Heard Island since first pups were sighted in 1963, and discusses whether increase is due to recovery or colonisation. Includes information on breeding sites and behaviour; inter-seasonal and inter-annual variations in diet, foraging location and depth; and interaction with fisheries. Also discusses reasons for decline in population of southern elephant seals at Heard Island, and comments on other seals found on island. |
