Vegetation of Heard Island and the McDonald Islands / Jennifer J. Scott, Dana M. Bergstrom.

Title: Vegetation of Heard Island and the McDonald Islands / Jennifer J. Scott, Dana M. Bergstrom.
Author(s): Scott, Jennifer J.
Bergstrom, Dana M.
Date: 2006.
Publisher: Chipping Norton, NSW: Surrey Beatty
In: Heard Island : Southern Ocean sentinel. (2006.),
Abstract: Describes vegetation of Heard Island and outlying McDonald Islands, only major sub-Antarctic group that appears to be free of human-introduced plants. Extensive and rapid glacial retreat and rising temperatures have exposed approximately 35 km² of new terrain and several large lagoons between 1947-2000, and significant changes in vegetation have been recorded between 1987-88 and 2003-04, especially on recently deglaciated land. Includes past history of vegetation; descriptions of algae, lichens and fungi, bryophytes and vascular plants; ecology and distribution of vascular plant species; biogeography; ecology of open cushionfield, fellfield, mossy fellfield, wet mixed herbfield, coastal biotic, saltspray, and closed cushionfield communities; and discusses vegetation changes and management implications.
