Record #183902:

An inventory of present glaciers on Heard Island and their historical variation / Andrew Ruddell.

Title: An inventory of present glaciers on Heard Island and their historical variation / Andrew Ruddell.
Author(s): Ruddell, Andrew.
Date: 2006.
Publisher: Chipping Norton, NSW: Surrey Beatty
In: Heard Island : Southern Ocean sentinel. (2006.),
Abstract: Updates inventory of glacier conditions on sub-Antarctic Heard Island using satellite imagery with various aerial and ground-based surveys from 1987-97, and provides reconstructions for all of island's glaciers over variety of past epochs and with variations since 1980. Discusses direct influences on glacier behaviour and their historical variations; pattern of variation of glacier recession; dependence of glacier variations on hypsometry. Apart from minor variations, there was little change in glaciers from 1860-1929. Many glaciers on eastern and northern sides of island underwent slight recession from 1929-55, and widespread recession from 1955-63. Some slightly re-advanced from 1963-71, since when there has been extensive recession, with 12% of ice volume lost between 1947-88. Evidence supports climate-change-related rather than volcanic-activity-related glacier recession, with warming rather than decrease in solid precipitation as main cause.
