Record #183882:

A need for more realistic ice-sheet models / C.J. van der Veen, ISMASS Members.

Title: A need for more realistic ice-sheet models / C.J. van der Veen, ISMASS Members.
Author(s): Veen, C. J. van der.
Date: 2007.
In: SCAR Report. (2007.), Vol. 30 (2007)
Abstract: Identifies major challenges to improving numerical ice-sheet models and suggests strategies for overcoming them, with particular reference to mounting evidence for active ice sheets and understanding that large ice sheets can undergo rapid changes. Includes interaction between ice-marginal processes and discharge from interior; environmental controls on ice sheet collapse; geologic and topographic controls on fast glacier flow and role of subglacial hydrology; and controls on surface mass balance. Suggests that whole ice sheet models currently used by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change may not adequately reflect rapid ice sheet change.
