Abstract: Examines international response to proposal to raise Antarctic question, with particular reference to opposition by uneasy alliance between British Commonwealth and Latin America. Argues that ability of Great Britain, Argentina and Chile to cooperate in keeping Antarctica off agenda of United Nations while bitterly disputing sovereignty of Antarctic Peninsula region set important precedent for 1959 Antarctic Treaty. Discusses role of Latin American opposition to India's proposal in helping fragment anti-imperial coalition in framework of post-colonial studies.
