On the relative abundance and distribution of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the Falkland Islands longline fishery / Oliver Yates, Paul Brickle.
Title: | On the relative abundance and distribution of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) and killer whales (Orcinus orca) in the Falkland Islands longline fishery / Oliver Yates, Paul Brickle. |
Author(s): | Yates, Oliver. Brickle, Paul. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Journal of Cetacean Research and Management. (2007.), Vol. 9(1) (2007) |
Abstract: | Presents abundance estimates for sperm and killer whales based on analyses of scientific observer records from longline fishing vessels between 2002-04. Results suggest that killer whales were restricted to north-east of zone, whereas sperm whales were present throughout east of zone along 1,000 m depth-contour, though relatively more abundant in north and south than in middle region. Discusses group size and distribution in relation to monthly fishing effort and temporal analysis of sighting is considered. 32.4% of observed stations had sperm whales present but no significant difference was found between catches with whales present and no whales present. |
