Abstract: Presents recent variations in ice-surface elevation and describes ice-flow dynamics in ablation zone of Tyndall glacier, a major outlet of Southern Patagonian Icefield. Using direct ablation measurements from five stakes on glacier surface and comparison of surface elevations over 70-station network with digital elevation model STRM (Shuttle Radar Topography Misson), estimates average thinning of about 2.69 ± m a⁻¹. Ice velocity estimates from stake movements reach 270 m a⁻¹. Concludes Zapata Sur lobe is undergoing sustained thinning, with ice front retreat and subglacial topography suggesting potential for drastic loss of ice volume.
