Abstract: Compares two airborne technologies for topographical measurements of glaciers: laser scanning and airborne interferometric SAR. Using data from acquisition flights during June 2003, creates two DEMs and compares them with contemporaneous GPS profiling. After correcting for surface lowering along GPS profile between acquisition dates, reports differences between laser and GPS data of 0.1 m ±  0.2 m and between InSAR DEM and laser data of -0.2 m ±  1.4 m. Over whole of Engabreen, Insar- and laser-scanning-derived DEMs differed by 0.3 m ±  3.6 m when non-glaciated areas were masked out. Concludes laser scanning more cost-effective method for operational DEM generation in this case.
