Abstract: Describes determination of firn line of Svartisen using ERS-2 SAR data from 1995 until 2003, based on first correcting image backscatter for topographic and geometric corrections. Also presents method for monitoring changes in glacier facies, discriminating between firn and ice facies using much higher backscatter intensity from frozen firn. Presents results for transects across areas of glacier chosen on basis of topographic smoothness, existence of precipitation zones and availabiltiy of field data. Observes substantial firn line retreat following stable conditions of 1990s. Notes that equilibrium line shows similar retreat, but with greater year-to-year variability, suggesting firn line may be superior climate indicator.
