Abstract: Describes two-step interactive modelling procedure to create glacier delineations for Hintereisferner from Landsat imagery. Describes creation of initial water mask from raw satellite image and glacier mask from raw image and water mask, and identification of clouds. Analyzes accuracy and assesses omissions at glacier margins due to surface debris. Compares area determination with conventional photogrammetric measurements. Presents change analysis for period 1991-97, reporting decrease in area of Hintereisferner from 159 km² to 138 km² over period 1985-99, of which 6 km² decrease occurred during 1991-97.
