Abstract: Describes improvements to model of Japan Meteorological Agency providing seven-day forecast of sea ice in southern Okhotsk Sea. These include model reformation, grid-size reduction, modified seawater mixing model, use of sea surface current data sets for sea ice season from numerical models, and tuning of ocean heat flux. Introduces distributed mass/discrete floe (DMDF) model as new dynamic model, describing representation of sea ice extent and internal stress. Assesses results and improvements in ice-edge error, and need for better knowledge of heat flux at ice-ocean interface.
