Post-drainage ice dam response at Lake Merzbacher, Inylchek glacier, Kyrgyzstan / C. Mayer, A. HaggW. Lambrecht, A. Helm, K. Scharrer.

Title: Post-drainage ice dam response at Lake Merzbacher, Inylchek glacier, Kyrgyzstan / C. Mayer, A. HaggW. Lambrecht, A. Helm, K. Scharrer.

In: Geografiska Annaler. Series A. Physical Geography. (2008.), Vol. 90(1) (2008)
Abstract: Examines influence of large glacier-dammed lake on Southern Inylchek glacier, focusing on relation between ice flow and variations in lake level. Reports detailed GPS measurements on ice dam and analysis of ASTER scenes from several subsequent years to examine post-drainage dam response and changed ice dynamics. Shows that high lake levels float large part of ice dam and lift its central region by almost 20 m, facilitating strong calving. Ice velocities are generally 1.5-2 times higher in summer than in winter, but velocities closer to lake increase to more than three times annual mean after drainage event (usually once a year) and show compressive flow during rest of year.
