Abstract: Describes Ortles-Cevedale Group (OCG) study area, tree-ring analysis of Norway spruce growth from Trafoi valley, and analysis of published glacier mass balance and terminus fluctuations through and since last century. Establishes growth-climate relationships between tree-ring chronologies and meteorological data, reporting strong signal of July temperatures in high-altitude chronology and signal of summer precipitation in low-altitude chronology. Reports extremely warm 2003 summer produced strong spruce response with one-year lag (high altitude benefit of warmer growing season and low-altitude growth inhibition following water stress). Discusses fluctuations of 75 OCG glaciers, noting highest mass loss since annual measurement began and greatest response to warmer climate for extremely small and steep glaciers.
