The osmoregulatory/excretory organs of the glacier-dwelling tardigrade Hypsibius klebelsbergi Mihelčič 1959 (Tardigrada) / Beate Pelzer, Hieronymus Dastych, Hartmut Greven.
Title: | The osmoregulatory/excretory organs of the glacier-dwelling tardigrade Hypsibius klebelsbergi Mihelčič 1959 (Tardigrada) / Beate Pelzer, Hieronymus Dastych, Hartmut Greven. |
Author(s): | Pelzer, Beate. Dastych, Hieronymus. Greven, Hartmut. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Mitteilungen aus dem Hamburgischen Zoologischen Museum und Institut. (2007.), Vol. 104 (2007) |
Abstract: | Argues that species may require powerful organs of osmoregulation because of extremely low conductivity of water in cryoconite holes in which it is exclusively found. Examines specimens obtained from Langtalferner in Ötztal Alps using light and electron microscopy. Describes detailed structure of species' three Malphigian tubules at transition of midgut to hindgut. Concludes structure of this osmoregulatory/excretory organ does not reflect the special conditions under which species lives. Briefly compares findings with those obtained from other Eutardigrada and summarises some functional considerations. |
