Abstract: Presents measurements from retreated glacier showing high enrichment coefficients in both young (12-70 years) and older (around 3,700 years) ice in comparison with current atmospheric levels of N₂O, CH₂=CHCH₃, CO₂, CH₃Cl, C₂H₅Cl, CH₂=CHCl, CH₃Br, CH₂Br₂, CHBr₃, CH₃I, C₂H₅I, CH₂=CHI, COS, CS₂, CH₃SSCH₃ and CH₃SCH₃. Suggests sources are natural (phytoplankton, ice microalgae and oceanic macroalgae, photolysis of organic matter deposited from ocean on surface of snow and firn and its redox transformations in snow pack), with further enrichment from dissolution of gases in meltwater percolating through underlying firn layers, subsequent refreezing of enriched solution during cold season and repeating of melt-freeze cycles. Presents estimates of gas emission fluxes from glaciers of coastal Antarctica during melting and iceberg calving, noting that while not exceeding 1% of global total, they can affect ecosystems, atmospheric chemistry and cloud formation.
