Abstract: Presents analysis for period 1962-2002 of multiyear airborne ice reconnaissance and satellite-derived ice information reflecting spatial distribution, size and duration of existence of stamukhas. Reports East Siberian sea characterised by largest number, forming off Siberian coasts of Arctic seas. Extensive shallow water areas, frequent preservation through summer of second- and multi-year ice with large draft, and compression and ridging of drifting ice contribute to this. Stamukhas are found more than 400 km from mainland coast, with drafts of 30-40 m, sail heights of 20-30 m and horizontal extents exceeding 10 km. Stamukhas in Chukchi sea are mainly in narrow coastal zone, where single stamukhas and thick multi-row grounded barriers with drafts up to 30 m form.
