Abstract: Studies population development and mortality in Swedish Sápmi, comparing changes between Saami and non-Saami, South and North Saami, and using material from Demographic Data Base at Umeå University. Finds that Saami mortality rates showed great fluctuations between 1776-1815, almost always peaking at higher rate than rest of Sweden; also that non-Saami experienced small reduction in mortality rates between 1856-1895, and Saami also showed overall improvement in health status in this period.
