Abstract: | Reports observation of killer whale (Orcinus orca) attack on narwhals (Monodon monoceros) at Kakiak Point, Nunavut, in August 2005, and documentation of behavioural response by narwhals. Narwhals display suite of behavioural changes in immediate presence of killer whales, including slow, quiet movements, use of very shallow water and formation of tight groups at surface. During attack, narwhals disperse broadly. |
