Abstract: Reports analysis of tundra plant samples, including Dicranum angustum, Puccinellia phryganodes and Salix polaris, from Ny-Ålesund. Finds levels of eight heavy metal elements in plant and soil samples from areas with previous coal-mining activities to be significantly higher than in those from other areas. Notes that Ny-Ålesund is less polluted by heavy metals than nearby northern European human living areas, but much more than tundras of Alaska, Greenland and Antarctic.
