| Abstract: | Summarises work of Cryosphere Theme Team of Integrated Global Observing Strategy (IGOS) partnership to devise Cryosphere Observing System (CryOS). Defines cryosphere and major applications of cryospheric data. Describes current capabilities and requirements for observing essential climate variables in domains of snow, sea ice, lake and river ice, ice sheets, glaciers and permafrost. Reviews in situ, satellite and airborne observing systems. Presents user requirements in cryospheric observations, data and products and recommendations on development and maintenance. Proposes measures to develop and coordinate cryospheric components of various observing systems to meet most user requirements within 10-15 years. Proposes arrangements to ensure data and products are known, available and openly accessible. |
