Abstract: Relates experiences of pioneers of Alpine science, tourism and mountaineering, based on accounts of travels in central Alps from 16th-18th centuries. Includes contemporary portraits, illustrations, woodcuts, etc., and discusses conditions influencing travel (Thirty Years War, etc.). Includes, e.g.: early English travelers, beginning with Sir Edward Unton in 1563; Johann Jacob Scheuchzer, author of Itinera Alpina (1723), featuring early theory of glacier motion based on expansive action of water freezing in crevasses; Windham's 1744 pamphlet describing exploration of glaciers of Savoie; Gottlieb Sigmund Gruner, who proposed theory of glacier movement based on basal melting/sliding; William Coxe; Horace Benedict de Saussure, author of Voyages dans les Alpes (1779-96) and pioneer Alpine scientist.
