Abstract: | Assesses performance of diatom, chironomid and pollen transfer functions for inferences of July air temperature during Holocene, using sediments from alpine lakes in area with low human impact. Demonstrates that diatom, chironomid and pollen assemblages in sediment cores contain climate information enabling present-day temperature at each lake to be inferred with reasonable confidence for most proxies. Most proxy records from sites consistently infer long-term decreasing trend in July air temperature from ca 6,000 cal. yr BP until present. However, large variations in temporal patterns of inferred temperatures appear during some periods, especially before 7,000 cal. yr BP, when there are also nonsynchronous changes in loss-on-ignition in lakes. |
