Traditional ecological knowledge: snow and Sámi reindeer herding / Elina M. Helander-Renvall.
Title: | Traditional ecological knowledge: snow and Sámi reindeer herding / Elina M. Helander-Renvall. |
Author(s): | Helander-Renvall, Elina M. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Arktisen keskuksen tiedotteita = Arctic Centre Reports. (2007.), Vol. 48 (2007) |
Abstract: | Illustrates ways in which traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of Saami reindeer herders assists in making decisions regarding adaptive strategies in response to changing weather and climate conditions. Considers traditional snow terminology, which helps Saami herders to identify and describe aspects of environment that are significant for adaptation. Argues that TEK has capacity to enrich scientific knowledge, but notes that many integrative approaches have failed. |
