Abstract: | Examines historical conflict in NWT between Native hunters and conservationists over three big game species: wood bison, muskox and caribou. Argues that introduction of game regulations, national parks and game sanctuaries was central to assertioon of state authority over traditional hunting cultures of Dene and Inuit. Also questions assumption that conservationists were motivated solely by enlightened preservationism. |
