| Abstract: | Reviews literature on risk factors for suicide, comparing incidence of suicide among aboriginal youth with that among Canadian young people as whole. Notes that suicidal behaviour affects youth in some aboriginal communities but not in others, demonstrating influence of social forces at community and regional level. Considers possible effect of government policies of forced assimilation enacted through residential school system and child welfare system on transmission of culture and maintenence of healthy communities. Assesses effectiveness of interventions to prevent suicide, and emphasises need for continued research. |
