Record #182876:

Experimental alteration of vegetation on nonsorted circles: effects on cryogenic activity and implication for climate change in the Arctic / Anja Kade, Donald A. Walker.

Title: Experimental alteration of vegetation on nonsorted circles: effects on cryogenic activity and implication for climate change in the Arctic / Anja Kade, Donald A. Walker.
Author(s): Kade, Anja.
Walker, Donald A.
Date: 2008.
In: Arctic, Antarctic, and Alpine Research. (2008.), Vol. 40(1) (2008)
Abstract: Investigates how changes in vegetation on nonsorted circles affects cryogenic processes, using data from experiment on 28 circles at moist non acidic tundra site in northern Alaska. Circles receive one of four treatments: vegetation removal; vegetation removal and sedge transplants; vegetation removal and moss transplants; or no manipulation. Finds thick vegeation mats act as insulating layer producing cooler summer temperatures and delaying thawing and freezing of soil; also bare soils allow for deeper thaw depths in summer and formation of more ice lenses (with greater frost heave in winter).
