Abstract: | Reconstructs relationship between first colonisers of Kodiak and neighbouring islands and Alutiiq people, using Russian American Company correspondence and records from Russian Orthodox Church in Alaska. Notes that American colonisation, which began with purchase of Alaska in 1867, coincided with decline of sea otter population, ushering in new economic pattern and new order of life. |
