Abstract: Investigates water quality and fish populations of 35 small lakes and brooks in Finland, Norway and Russia, 1-50 km from smelters in Nikel and Zapolyarnyy, north-western Kola Peninsula. Results indicate no widespread damage to fish populations even in most sensitive small waters. Small waters close to smelters are well buffered against effects of high sulphate deposition, but extremely high concentrations of heavy metals are local threat to biota in small waters close to smelters where some lakes appear to have lost all fish.
