Record #182178:

Is Siberian reindeer herding in crisis? Living with reindeer fifteen years after the end of state socialism / David G. Anderson.

Title: Is Siberian reindeer herding in crisis? Living with reindeer fifteen years after the end of state socialism / David G. Anderson.
Author(s): Anderson, David G.
Date: 2006.
Abstract: Argues that, instead of focusing on numbers of domestic reindeer, as some commentators have, emphasis should be on ways people form new relationships with reindeer in order to take advantage of opportunities offered in post-Soviet era. With reference to two case studies in taiga and treeline areas (in Evenkiya and Zabaikal'ye), gives examples of interstitial practices used by reindeer herders to survive and profit from fractured and over-regulated spaces. Contends that post-Soviet herders have unique adaptive strategy in post-Soviet economy.
Notes:

Offprint: Nomadic Peoples. Vol. 10(2) :87-104.
