Trophic interactions within the Ross Sea continental shelf ecosystem / Walker O. Smith, Jr, David G. Ainley, Riccardo Cattaneo-Vietti.

Title: Trophic interactions within the Ross Sea continental shelf ecosystem / Walker O. Smith, Jr, David G. Ainley, Riccardo Cattaneo-Vietti.
Author(s): Smith, Walker O.,
Ainley, David G.
Cattaneo-Vietti, Riccardo.
Date: 2007.
Abstract: Reviews available data on currents and ice concentrations in Ross Sea, their spatial variations, and components of neritic food web including lower and middle levels (phytoplankton, zooplankton, krill, fishes), upper trophic levels (seals, penguins, pelagic birds, whales) and benthic fauna. Presents hypothetical food web, and discusses critical role of biotic interactions such as Euphausia crystallorophias and Pleuragramma antarcticum as grazers of lower levels and food for higher trophic levels. Neritic food web in Ross Sea contrasts dramatically with others in Antarctic that appear to be structured around Euphausia superba, and benthic-pelagic coupling appears stronger than in other regions. Highlights unknowns within food web, and discusses impacts of changing Ross Sea habitat on ecosystem. In special issue Antarctic ecology : from genes to ecosystems. Part 1.
