Abstract: Account of experiences during 2003-04 season of musician working with British Antarctic Survey's Artists and Writers Programme. Includes details of recording equipment, and describes sound objects in terms of pitch, texture, duration, dynamics and form-temporal organisation using circumnavigation of grounded iceberg, visit to penguin colony, and vocal quartets using recordings of conversation as examples. Discusses listener's contribution to electroacoustic music. Major works resulting from period in Antarctic are DVD/book Antarctica : musical images from the frozen continent; surround sound installation Singing Ringing Buoy; and theatrical production for children Play : Antarctica commissioned by Unicorn Theatre in London.
