| Abstract: | Examines features of horizontal and vertical distribution of phytoplankton, both in euphotic zone and also in deeper layers (100-200 m), in order to analyse biogenic sedimentation. Identifies following areas in terms of composition and abundance of algae: 1. fairly productive southern area corresponding to Atlantic waters; 2. central area with low algae abundance; 3. more productive northern area where upwelling of deep waters occurs. Analysis of phytoplankton vertical distribution shows that, during autumn, algae are not abundant and therefore trophogenic layer extends to depth of 50 m. |
