Abstract: Presents results of 14 interviews conducted with 18 polar bear viewers visiting two protected areas near Churchill, Manitoba, and considers three themes emerging from interviews relating to characteristics of the experience, perceptions of self and others, and photography. Characteristics of tourism experience described by participants include need for exclusivity, experiential nature, and spiritual nature. Some interviewees viewed themselves as part of larger group of tourists visiting Canada, yet distinctly different from "mass" tourists.
