Record #181816:

Information on the status of fjord Notothenia rossii, Gobionotothen gibberifrons and Notothenia coriiceps in the lower South Shetland Islands, derived from the 2000-2006 monitoring program at Potter Cove / E.R. Barrera-Oro, E.R. Marschof.

Abstract: Results from long-term monitoring program of demersal fish at inshore sites of South Shetland Islands show that decline in trammel net catches of Notothenia rossii and Gobionotothen gibberifrons in relation to non-commercially fished Notothenia coriiceps is still evident, and that no recovery of these stocks was observed more than two decades after end of commercial fishery. At Potter Cove, despite overall increasing trend of N. rossii catches from 1991-2006, actual levels found are half those of early 1980s, and G. gibberifrons have declined to almost zero. At Harmony Cove, relative abundance of N. rossii showed increase in 2002 and 2003, whereas G. gibberifrons was absent in catches. These trends are consistent with those observed in offshore population in similar period.
