Reindeer (Rangifer tarqandus tarandus) feeding on lichens and mushrooms: traditional ecological knowledge among reindeer-herding Sami in northern Sweden / Berit Inga.
Title: | Reindeer (Rangifer tarqandus tarandus) feeding on lichens and mushrooms: traditional ecological knowledge among reindeer-herding Sami in northern Sweden / Berit Inga. |
Author(s): | Inga, Berit. |
Date: | 2007. |
In: | Rangifer. (2007.), Vol. 27(2) (2007) |
Abstract: | Reports study performed in four reindeer-herding districts (Saami villages) in northern Sweden, where herders, born 1950 or earlier, are interviewed about reindeer foraging behaviour on lichens and mushrooms (especially relating to non-summer grazing habits and characteristics of good winter feeding ground). Ground lichens preferred by reindeer are Cladonia species, while nitrogen-fixing species such as Nephroma arcticum and Stereocaulon pascale are said not to be preferred. Snow conditions affect winter grazing and herders make early winter use of habitats where snow is likely to be problematic. |
