| Abstract: | Examines CaCO₃ migration within glaciers and marginal zones of basins of Werenskioldbreen and Elisebreen, Svalbard, based on analysis of 228 samples from glacier forefields. Pays special attention to cryochemical processes responsible for precipitation of calcium carbonate in icing (naled) ice near fronts of polythermal glaciers and estimates their importance in general mineral mass transfer in glacier system. Proposes functional model of mineral flow paths and estimates intensity of glacial processes in Werenskioldbreen basin. Discusses role of naled fields and structure of calcite crystals within them. Concludes glacial system is much more effective in mobilising calcium carbonate in natural environment than is fluvial system in temperate zone. |
