Study of wind tunnel similarity on snowdrift around buildings / Susumu Oikawa, Tsukasa Tomabechi, Takeshi Ishihara.

Title: Study of wind tunnel similarity on snowdrift around buildings / Susumu Oikawa, Tsukasa Tomabechi, Takeshi Ishihara.
Author(s): Oikawa, Susumu.
Tomabechi, Tsukasa.
Ishihara, Takeshi.
Date: 2007.
Language: Japanese.
In: Journal of Snow Engineering of Japan. (2007.), Vol. 23(2) (2007)
Abstract: Presents requirements for simulating drifting snow around buildings in wind tunnel. Reports that, e.g.: threshold friction velocity ratio and angle of repose of particles should match in wind tunnel model and prototype situations; Stokes parameter in wind tunnel should be less than one in order to follow flow around building model (real snow particles and large particles with artificial snow in wind tunnel did not follow flow); with very fine model particles, terminal velocity ratio was not necessarily matched for model and prototype. Reports easy transition from saltation to suspension at wind speed of 5-6 m/s, due to turbulence generated by buildings, so that saltation was not principal transport mechanism. Discusses Froude number requirement.
