| Abstract: | Reports investigations of suspended sediment reaching Nigardsvatn via meltwater from Nigardsbreen since formation of proglacial lake in 1936-67. Studies include annual survey of delta formed by deposition of coarse material, collection of entire bottom load using net across river, and water sampling at lake inlet and outlet. Presents calculation of annual sediment input and output and varve studies, noting that 70 to 85% of suspended sediment is deposited on lake bottom. Discusses sediment transport and deposition. Calculates erosion averaged over glacier bed area to be 0.3 mm/a. Estimates lake will be filled in 500 years at current rate. |
